Overflow pool or skimmer pool for a Gulf villa?

Short answer: an overflow pool keeps its water level with the deck and lets the surface spill into a channel and a balance tank; a skimmer pool keeps the water lower and draws the surface through openings in the wall. The overflow pool removes floating dust better and looks cleaner, but it needs a balance tank and more plant space. Sauna Dekor Spa Solutions builds villa pools in the Gulf; these are the questions we use to decide between the 2.

Both pool types filter the same water through the same kind of plant. What differs is where the water leaves the pool, how high it sits, and what has to be built around and below the pool to make that work. In a Gulf villa, where wind carries fine dust and sand onto the water most days, that difference shows up in daily upkeep as well as in the drawings.

What is the difference between an overflow pool and a skimmer pool?

The water level and the way surface water leaves the pool. In an overflow pool the water sits level with the edge and runs over it into a channel on 1 or more sides. In a skimmer pool the water sits a little below the coping and is drawn into skimmer openings set into the pool wall.

Sport England's design guidance, written for public pools, puts the case for the overflow, or deck-level, type plainly: deck-level systems are the most effective at removing contaminants from the water surface.

Why does an overflow pool need a balance tank?

Because the water level has to stay at the edge whether 0 or 10 people are swimming. When bathers enter, they push water over the edge; when they leave, the level drops. A balance tank collects that displaced water and returns it, so the edge keeps running. Sport England notes the balance tank is needed for deck-level pools only.

The tank is a real structure, usually below or beside the pool, with its own access for cleaning, a level control and an automatic top-up. In a villa it is the item most often missing from an early layout. If the plot has no room for it, or the pool sits on a slab over a basement already full of services, that alone can decide the question in favour of skimmers.

Which type copes better with dust and sand in the Gulf?

The overflow pool, on surface debris. Fine dust, sand and leaves float before they sink, and an overflow edge takes the surface off along its whole length, on 1 or more sides. A skimmer pool collects the same debris only where its skimmers are, so wind direction and skimmer positions decide how much reaches the bottom first.

That does not make skimmer pools a poor choice. With enough skimmers on the downwind side, return jets set to push the surface towards them, and baskets emptied often, a skimmer pool in Dubai stays clean. The overflow pool simply asks less of the daily routine, and more of the construction. Where dust is heavy, we also look at the filter and backwash plan for either type, since the sand that sinks still has to come out.

How does the choice change the look and use of the villa pool?

These are 2 different edges. An overflow pool reads as a sheet of water at the level of the deck, with a grating line where the water leaves. A skimmer pool shows a band of wall tile between the water and the coping. Overflow edges also suit level, step-free entry, which Sport England's guidance prefers for easy access to the water.

For the family using it, 3 practical points follow. With water at deck level, splashes spread across the deck, so the deck finish must be slip resistant when wet and fall towards the channel. The grating is walked on barefoot, so its material and fixings need to stay cool and secure. And with no visible lip, children and guests need a clear edge marking, by contrast in colour or texture, to see where the deck ends.

What does each type need behind the scenes?

A skimmer pool needs a pump, filter, heating or cooling, and dosing, piped to skimmers, main drains and returns. An overflow pool needs all of that plus the channel drainage, the balance tank and its level control. That 1 paragraph is the whole difference in the plant room, but it changes its size and depth.

Can a skimmer pool be turned into an overflow pool later?

Rarely without rebuilding the edge. Converting means 4 changes: raising the water to deck level, cutting a channel around the pool, adding a balance tank and repiping the plant. On an existing villa pool that is close to building a new shell edge, so the decision belongs at the design stage.

The reverse question also comes up: an owner who chose an overflow pool and finds the balance tank hard to service. Here the fix is access, not conversion. We plan a tank hatch outside the pool deck, a ladder or step into the tank, and a drain so it can be emptied and cleaned.

How should a villa owner decide between the 2?

By answering 4 questions in order. Is there space and depth for a balance tank? How much wind-blown dust reaches the pool? How important is a level, step-free edge? Who will maintain the pool each day? If the first answer is no, choose skimmers; otherwise the next 3 usually point to overflow.

  1. Space for the tank: no room, or no depth below the pool, means a skimmer pool.
  2. Dust and leaves: open, windy plots favour the overflow edge.
  3. Look and access: a level water line and step-free entry come with the overflow type.
  4. Daily care: a skimmer pool needs baskets emptied often; an overflow pool needs its tank and channel kept clean.

Frequently asked questions about overflow and skimmer pools

Is an overflow pool the same as an infinity pool?

Not quite. An infinity pool is an overflow pool whose water spills over 1 edge with a view beyond it. An overflow pool in general can run over any number of edges into a channel, usually with a grating set into the deck.

Does an overflow pool use more water?

It holds extra water in the balance tank and channel, and that water has to be kept topped up. In a hot, windy climate plan for automatic top-up and level control on the tank, and ask for an estimate of losses at design stage.

How many skimmers does a villa pool need?

It depends on surface area, shape and wind. The aim is that wind pushes debris towards a skimmer rather than into a dead corner, so skimmers usually sit on the downwind side, with return jets set to move the surface towards them.

Is a skimmer pool cheaper to build?

Usually, because it needs no perimeter channel, no balance tank and less plant space. The gap depends on the size of the pool and how much structure the tank needs, so compare 2 priced designs for the same plot rather than general figures.

Which type is easier to maintain?

They need different care. A skimmer pool needs baskets emptied often, especially after dusty days. An overflow pool needs its channel, grating and balance tank cleaned on a schedule, and its level control checked. Neither is maintenance-free.

Can I have overflow on 1 side and skimmers elsewhere?

Not in a simple way, because 1 body of water has 1 level: it cannot sit at the edge on 1 side and below the coping on another. Any mixed design has to be engineered as an overflow pool, balance tank included, from the start.
