A Villa Spa in Abu Dhabi: The Plant Room Checklist

A steam generator such as the Condair Sigma wants a steam hose no longer than 4 m and a plant room kept between 1 °C and 40 °C. That is why a villa spa in Abu Dhabi needs its plant room fixed before the layout, against 7 checks: space and access, distance to the steam room, cooling, a floor drain, a water test, power and noise. Sauna Dekor Spa Solutions plans these rooms with the villa design team.

Why does the plant room come first?

Because 3 of the 7 checks set where the spa rooms can go. The steam room must sit within a short pipe run of its generator, the chiller needs fresh air, and every appliance needs a drain. A plant room found late usually means moving a wall or a ceiling.

How close must the steam generator be?

Close: the Condair Sigma manual asks for the shortest possible steam hose, at most 4 m, with a minimum bend radius and a steady fall. A steam room runs at 40–50 °C at close to 100 % relative humidity, and every extra metre of hose loses heat and returns condensate.

In a villa that usually puts the plant room next to the steam room or directly below it. The steam generator is bought in from its maker with its own certification; we size and place it.

How is an Abu Dhabi plant room kept cool?

With mechanical cooling or ventilation designed for summer, not for the catalogue. The Sigma manual asks for a room between 1 °C and 40 °C and at most 75 % RH, and a chiller rejects heat into the same space. A sealed room holding a running chiller can pass that limit in summer.

So the cooling load of the plant room is drawn by the MEP engineer at concept stage. A cold plunge chiller needs fresh air or a ducted route for its rejected heat; see our note on cold plunge chillers. We build cold plunge pools for water temperatures from 2 to 15 °C, and the chiller is sized on the real summer air around it.

What does the water test decide?

Whether the generator and the plunge need softening or other treatment. Abu Dhabi runs on desalinated supply, and the utility, TAQA Distribution, does not publish a delivered hardness figure, so we test the water on site and specify against the result. That 1 sample can change the plant list.

What power does a villa spa need?

1 dedicated circuit per appliance, sized to each maker's rating: sauna heater, steam generator, chiller, pumps and controls. Each is drawn on the single-line diagram before the board is ordered. How a sauna heater circuit is sized is in our note on sauna electrical requirements.

Frequently asked questions about a villa spa plant room

How big should a villa spa plant room be?

Big enough to service and replace every unit: generator, chiller, pumps, softener and panels, each with the clearances in its maker's manual. We list the units first, then draw the room around them, rather than giving 1 fixed area for every villa.

Can the steam generator sit in the garage?

Only if the garage is within the steam hose length the maker allows, 4 m for a Condair Sigma, and stays between 1 °C and 40 °C. Most garages are too far from the steam room or too hot in summer.

Does the plant room need a floor drain?

Yes. The Condair Sigma manual allows installation only in rooms with a floor drain, or with a leak monitor that shuts off the water. Chillers, softeners and pumps also need somewhere safe for water to go.

Why test the water in Abu Dhabi?

Because the delivered water quality is not published as a figure, and it decides softening for the steam generator and treatment for the plunge. We take a sample from the actual supply and specify against the result.

Can the chiller share a room with the steam generator?

Yes, if the room is cooled or ventilated for both. The chiller rejects heat into the space, and the generator wants a room between 1 °C and 40 °C and at most 75 % RH, so the cooling is sized for both units together.

Boat and Yacht Spa Design: What a Sauna Asks of a Vessel

The first version of this article, published in December 2023, described a scope we do not have — it claimed work "from propulsion to stability", which belongs to the naval architect and the shipyard, and it said almost nothing about the work we actually do on vessels. Gobek Tasi: How a Hammam's Heated Marble Platform Is Built

The gobek tasi — göbek taşı in Turkish, the heated marble platform at the centre of a hammam hot room — is the single heaviest and slowest element in the whole wet area. A 30 mm top slab weighs about 81 kg per square metre and needs roughly 0.36 kWh per square metre just to come up to working temperature. Almost every problem people have with one traces back to that mass. What is a gobek tasi, and what is it actually for? It is a large heated marble table at the centre of the hararet, the hot room, and it is a working surface rather than a decorative one. Guests lie on it for the soap and scrub; the heat comes up through the body from below, over 20 to 40 minutes, instead of arriving as hot air. That distinction sets every specification that follows.
